merry xmas everyone. the arc cafe, that heart in a town full of clubs, that humble home for the remarkable! if it weren’t for the staff and trustees, who give so much to keep the place alive! overworked and underpaid or even unpaid … from the other side of the world i look back and think you guys are incredible. it’s a beautiful thing. so if you’re reading this in dunedin, keep an eye out for the arc angels and shake a hand or hug or shout out… because dunedin is made the amazing place it is by people like these, make no mistake! hey! love to you all, dear friends, i miss you terribly. i can’t get back in feb as i hoped but will see you in may for sure… go on, write to me, tell me stories… xx e.

In answer to the R18 thing, it is just the law in NZ. We’d love to have younger people too but there is no way around that law if you sell alchol. Sorry.
the law
– Tuesday, May 23, 2000 at 17:53:52 (NZST)

The only thing I don’t understand is….why are you R18? I’m under 18 (but at varsity), I’m a songwriter and guitarist, and I would *love* to hear some live music, get some inspiration, and drink some good coffee. Why are there signs on the door saying I’m not welcome? Do you think young people will ruin your atmosphere? Young people who want to go to Arc go for the same reason everyone else does – because it’s wonderful. Your front page says you are ‘non-exclusive’…..well dammit I feel excluded. You’re a *cafe* for f**ks sake, not a pub. I don’t want to drink. I just want to listen…. Answers, anyone?

We were in Dunedin for three days in early February (9, 10 & 11) and spent a couple of hours each day/evening in the Arc. What a great place! Thick vegan pizza slices, pints of Otago Dark, free internet access, terrific music – what more could anyone ask for? Too bad you can’t do “take aways” here on our island in Maine! Oh well, we will just have to come back to Dunedin!

Hello Arc Cafe, Greetings from Atlanta, Georgia USA! Great website, I’ll check back again to hear some music. I am an amateur guitar player, and I enjoy a variety of styles. I also have been trying to track down an old friend in Dunedin. At college in the States we played basketball on the same team and roomed together. He returned to Dunedin after college where his family lives. His name is Chris Pollard, and his hometown is Gore. He’s about 6 foot 8 inches tall, also plays some guitar, is very funny, and most likely would be known to hang out at places like the Arc Cafe. He is probably around 32 years old now. My wife and I would love to hear how he is doing. If anyone is interested in forwarding this message, I would greatly appreciate it. I can send a photograph also. Thanks and may God bless, John

Have been coming to the Arc regularly (like every day) for the last couple of months. The food is delicious (although some of the spelling is a bit ropey), and the gigs I’ve attended have been excellent (especially the Xmas party, when Martin Phillipps proved beyond a doubt that he is the greatest musician this country has ever produced). One thing that does need seeing to, though, is use – or rather abuse – of the Internet. Many of the people who come in here flagrantly disregard the 25-minute rule – one favourite trick is to lift the card out when there are only 5 minutes to go and then put it back in, thus returning the timer to 25 minutes. I think a more sophisticated timing system that forbids this “cheating” needs to be installed. Or you could change the notice to “staying on longer than 25 minutes is punishable by death (or Britney Spears)”.

I lived in Melbourne for a year, and maybe I’ll fly over again. Your cafe will be on my schedule then. Let me know if any of you know how I can get hold of a copy of the CLOUDBOY ep ….of course I have listened to it on this site, many times, but I would love to get my own copy. Help me please! this isn’t really a guest book entry but it is the only way we can contact you we were hoping to see the live pictures of the cafe and of our daughter visiting you the video doesn’t seem to change. what video format do you use? We have tried to e-mail you but messages seem to want to go to via hot mail – and can’t connect. What’s what?

the tardis door opened. and it was the same. but different too. ARC is an excellent PR piece for dunedin and recaptures the beauty, which for me represents youth culture and comfortable debauchery there too many years ago. please check out WAMMO postbeta as we are profiling/linking to ARC on 11 feb 98.

Delighted to find your web site and I look forward to visiting your Cafe. Am in Wellington for a couple of months and enjoying its downtown cafe life–but with no internet access cafes! I guess Dunedin is showing the way! Best wishes.

Hello to everyone back in old Dunedin. Missing the place and the faces. A special hi to Andy, hope you are not finding the coffee making too tough. Surely not, you just show the espresso machine who is boss. Love and kisses Katrina

First of all, thanks for putting up such a great site on the Net. But more than that, I really appreciate your providing free Internet access and surfing to all who stop in, including my globe-trotting who are visiting NZ and are now able to send me email and check on the latest postings on my web page. I will send them all your way. THANKS!!! Cheers from sunny San Diego, where it’s always warm and fuzzy,

Thanks to Nick to introduced me to this cafe. This looks like a wonderful place to be! When I visit NZ, I know where one of my stops will be! I like the fact that you give your profits to local artists…This is a very good thing. Keep up the good work and have fun with your cafe. Thank you for sharing your adventure with me!

I was disappointed to discover Apple & Eve has had to close. I hope you will be able to find other premise and so continue in business. Apple & Eve was my favourite cafe. No, I didn’t call in often but I liked very much the decor, the internet connection, being able to sit on a comfortable couch, read pooh bear, etc. David
